Manchester

Located in northwest England, Manchester is the UKs largest city after London and is often called the Capital of the North. It is a city of many firsts. It was the first industrial city in the world and played a major role in the cotton industry during the industrial revolution. It was the first to have a passenger train station, with trains relying on steam power and it was here at Manchester university that the atom was first split. Chetham’s Library which opened in 1653, was the first ever free public library and is the oldest English speaking library in the world. The city has the largest student population in Europe with over 200 languages spoken. Manchester is world renowned as the football capital of the world and is home to the most famous team Manchester United. As well as sport it has become world celebrated for its thriving and diverse music scene, giving birth to both the Halle Orchestra and the group Oasis.
