Tropic Air flies to Belmopan 4 times daily from the Cayes, both Belize City airports and destinations to the South and West of Belize.
Belmopan is the capital of Belize. It was founded in 1979 as a safer alternative to the then capital, Belize City which was hit by Hurricane Hattie in 1961 and severely damaged. It is one of the smallest capitals in the Americas and also one of the newest in the world. Located in the Cayo district, it is commonly referred to as “Garden City”. The National Assembly Building, the seat of government is located here and is designed to look like a Mayan temple thus reflecting Belize’s Maya heritage. Most of Belize’s foreign embassies although originally reluctant to leave Belize City, are now based here. The Belize Archaeology Museum is also located here. Belmopan has one of the fastest growing populations in Belize and the city continues to thrive. Tropic Air saw the necessity for an airport in Belmopan to allow tourists easy access to the eco opportunities in this area and opened the first airport here in 2010.
Belmopan is one of the inland destinations to fly to for inland adventures and to experience the natural beauty of the Cayo District. The surrounding area is home to a variety of eco-Jungle lodges specializing in birding, medicine trails, horseback riding and more. Tropic Air offers 2 inland tours to this area, the spectacular Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) cave and also the exhilarating Black Hole Drop.
